I just went on a great classic car rally. This is the car version of the Moto Melee which I went on in June. The roads are just amazing here in Northern California, they are just perfect for bombing a bunch of old cars through the twisties. This year there were over 70 old jalopies which made the run. There was everything from a Ferarri Dino down to a beater Opel Kadett, and just about everything in between. The rally takes three days, and covers around a thousand miles, so the old cars get a real workout.
We rolled in the '66 Benz, which thankfully did just fine. It is a bit of a heavy car for some of the crazy corners that the route winds through, but otherwise was a good car for the Melee. I'm putting the old girl up for sale, so if you know anyone who wants a sweet vintage ride, send them my way. Here are some pictures (the first two were taken by Craig, and the others by me), the last picture is a link to a "collection" of pictures.
I really wish I had my "dream garage" right about now. You know, the one that is the size of a warehouse, and has the perfect floor and about a dozen classic cars and/or motorcycles lining the sides. Yeah, that one. The one that has a corner devoted to the leather couch and the bar... and this pool table...
So I have this Alfa Romeo. As one would expect, a vintage Italian car isn't the most reliable thing in the world. It kind of goes with the territory. Still, I've had a lot of vintage vehicles in my day, and not many of them have left me stranded with absolutely no hope of figuring out what is wrong with them.
The Alfa, on the other hand, does that... it leaves me hanging. It just mysteriously dies when it is driving. Only occasionally though, mainly to keep things interesting.
So I took it into the shop a few weeks ago, to get the thing fixed once and for all. I had brought it in there for the same problem a few months ago, and they couldn't find what was wrong. This time, I was armed with a bit more information, so I hoped they could track it down. Alas, no dice on that. They called me last night and told me to come pick it up. They said that it was running fine for them, and that they could not get it to repeat the problem. Hmmmm, now, I'm going to have to find some other mechanic to look at it... or just sell it, and get a different vintage car that won't leave me stranded!
